What’s Coming Up?
By Debbie Richards
It is that time of year again when we begin to look ahead at the calendar of race events to see what we want to do in the next year. As I look ahead to those races that are "new" to me and ones I have been wanting to do, I begin to plan my calendar. First, looking at my overall goals and then, at each month for individual race events, training, and then at the whole year as in "big picture" of what I will have accomplished at the end of 2017. Then, in the end I ask, will it bring me closer to my healthy journey for me and those around me?
In the year, do I want to do more 5K's, 10K's, more 1/2 marathons, maybe another Tri? Once I determine the bigger goals for the year, I then plan out training and mini events to lead up to the bigger ones, and the mini goals help me to have some successes along the way to keep me engaged. If my goal is to do more 1/2 marathons, then I will schedule at least 2 sometimes 3 in the year - it is never fun to do just one! In between, I will plan my training and mini goals. Also, I will shoot for a better finish time or a better after-race feeling. I know the better condition I am in, the better I feel during and after a race event, and this means recovery becomes easier. Then, I want to find out who else is doing similar goal events. This is where Team Playmakers has been extremely important. Being apart of this teams means I am with like-minded people doing like-minded events. And I really enjoy training with others. There is always someone in the group that can carry the conversation longer, make you laugh, and make you think -- and this makes the time fly. It has made all the difference in my training!
