Leaves are changing colors, jackets are coming out of the closet, pumpkin spice lattes are being ordered…this can only mean one thing: fall is here.
On September 21st, we officially begin (what I like to think is) Michigan’s best season. From apple orchard visits to bonfires, the “mitten state” truly embodies all things autumn. In the blink of an eye, trees and forests transform into an alluring display of reds, yellows, and oranges, making the outdoors hard to resist. For many, the change in season also means that it is time to “toe the line” in a fall race! Whether you are getting ready for an upcoming marathon or tackling an 8k with your co-workers, there are several opportunities in the Lansing area to race this fall!
Capital City River Run – September 21-22
The Lansing River Trail is a favorite hotspot for runners and walkers across the 517. On September 21-22, a compilation of family-friendly races will take off in Downtown Lansing. Races include a half marathon, half marathon relay, 5K, and kid’s races. All of which celebrate, build awareness of, and financially support Greater Lansing organizations. The CCRR highlights both the eclectic urban corridor and natural beauty of Michigan’s capital city and the adjoining rivers.

Autumn Classic 8K – September
Combine city running with scenic trails – two weeks in a row! One week following CCRR is the Autumn Classic 8K run/walk. Spend the morning running amidst gorgeous fall colors at Lake Lansing North. This fall race tradition includes an 8K walk/run, 1-2 mile walks, and free children’s fun run and activities all morning! The Autumn Classic Special Olympics Michigan Area 8 and provides optional fundraising and donation opportunities for participants and sponsors. This race is also a great way to join together your friends, family, or co-workers to form a team!

Detroit Marathon – October
Run through two countries…before noon. The Detroit Free Press/TCF Marathon weekend takes place on October 19-20. The marathon starts in the heart of the city and runs through historic neighborhoods, around beautiful Belle Isle, and along the spectacular RiverWalk. Although the International full, half, and relay race registrations are now closed, there is still time to join the 5K, 1-Mile, kids races, and US-only half!

Up to 20 – Mile
Long training runs are way more fun with others! Join Team Playmakers for an aided up-to-20-mile training run on Saturday, September 28 beginning at 8am. This event is open to the public with light refreshments available at the finish. The training run around the Okemos/Haslett area aligns perfectly for those training for the Detroit Free Press/TCF Bank Marathon, but can be used by anyone looking to join a group for a run of any distance.

Just a Run
No frills, no stress, no start line…just a run. Beginning October 3rd at 6pm, Playmakers is kicking off our Just A Run series. Gather with fellow runners at the store every Thursday night for a few, casual miles. Chillier evening temperatures are approaching, so be sure to come prepared with warm layers and reflective lights/clothing for safety!
Cheers to trail conquering and post-run cider this fall!
